Private care for women

Withdrawing that private option removes patient choice

Letter of the Day
Letter of the Day

Sir, – I am writing in full support of Prof Seán Daly’s view of choice for women in maternity care.

Private care for many is not about the luxury of having a private room.

Rather, it is about being heard, support, reassurance, continuity of care and choice.

The UK maternity system, which is largely a one-tier public service provided free through the National Health Service, has been rocked by a series of maternity scandals over the last decade.

Our public system here is already completely overstretched.

Taking away a private option removes patient choice. Women must be able to choose how to be cared for during pregnancy and childbirth. – Yours, etc,

ÁINE MULLAHY,

Cabinteely,
