Sir, – Thank you, Kathy Sheridan, for your paean to the peann luaidhe (sorry). You laid out in detail why the Irish election voting and counting system is so effective in its “boring” simplicity. The more sophisticated the counting system, the less transparent the process and the more likely it is to be subverted.

Bertie Ahern, in one of his many missteps, might be forgiven for not foreseeing election meddling two decades ago; such interference is as plain as day now. So, democracy is protected by a lack of sophistication – peann luaidhe abú! – Yours, etc,
