A key note about music

For children living in terrible circumstances, access to music and culture can be a counterpoint to trauma

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – I write to commend the observations made by Denis McClean (An Irish Diary, May 27th).

I am the former president of the European Music Council (Bonn, Germany) and executive board member of the International Music Council (Unesco, Paris).

To see the smiling face of a young boy living in circumstances few of us can imagine, and knowing that smile is the direct result of his access to music, is uplifting to me and to so many of us whose lives have been enriched by our access to and enjoyment of music, culture and the arts.

Protecting and encouraging that access should be at the forefront of a caring and democratically elected populace throughout Europe and, wherever possible, worldwide. – Yours, etc,

IAN SMITH

Durrow,

Co Laois.
