Sir, – As Maureen Dowd explains in her piece, (May 18th), those things they make us human: “empathy, emotion, psychology, critical thinking ... they are facets of the human condition that AI cannot replicate” – “yet”.
Why? Although AI is terrific at logical thinking it cannot produce what we humans can- that “emotional depth” which colours the range of the humanities, that exciting, wonderful corpus of the study of human society, culture and the human experience.
While we worry about to what dark place the development of AI may be leading, Dowd’s article lifted my spirit and reminded me that all hope is not lost; there is, though, that weasel word still rattling around in my brain – “yet”. – Yours, etc,
