Greenway decision woefully short-sighted

Dublin in desperate need of safer, healthier ways to get around

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - The decision to drop two sections of the planned South Dublin Greenway linking Cornelscourt to Cherrywood (“Two sections of planned south Dublin greenway dropped,” News, March 10th) is yet another blow to those of us who yearn for a city that values people over cars.

Some residents of the Park estate in Cabinteely worry that a greenway would disrupt their quiet streets or bring too many outsiders into the area. But making it easier for people to walk, cycle or use e-bikes is not about taking something away. It is, in fact, about giving everyone safer, easier and even healthier ways to get around and connect with their community.

Look to Singapore, where greenways elegantly connect the city, making active travel both safe and pleasant. In Dublin, by contrast, it is nearly impossible to travel between our local villages without a car. A greenway would be a vital and necessary piece of infrastructure to bridge this gap in transport infrastructure. If we truly want to create communities that are safe, vibrant and accessible for everyone, we must prioritise these kinds of projects and not let short-sighted opposition stand in the way.

It is also time for our local councillors to show real leadership. They must think about the long-term needs of the community, not just the next election cycle. Dublin deserves bold decisions that put people and the future first, not timid ones that simply aim to keep everyone happy in the short term. – Yours, etc,
