Sir, – When the February bank holiday was originally conceived, its main purpose, as portrayed by politicians and advocates, was to have been a remembrance of those people who passed away during the pandemic. We all knew then how hard this had been and such a recognition seemed appropriate.
Since then, it has been transformed into yet another three-day Fáilte “festival” tangentially linked to multiple versions of a semi-mythical person. It appears that an ability to remember hardship suffered cannot compete with the greasy till. – Yours, etc,
