Memories of an early Dublin Airport

Sir, – A letter writer asked: what is wrong with “ Dublin Airport”?

I’m sorry but in my youth it was always known as “ Collinstown” airport.

I first visited there in 1943 on the crossbar of my dad’s bicycle.

There was no-one there except a mechanic working on a bi-plane who invited us on board to see the interior!

Later, when I should have been studying for my exams, I assisted my great pal, Billy O’Neill who photographed, for cash (anyone remember that?) all arrivals each Saturday, and I collected details and issued receipts.

We cycled to the airport, brought our bikes, unhindered, through the arrivals hall, to a little office, provided by Aer Lingus. It was just beside the runway and there was no security.

The money we made funded wonderful cycling and hostelling trips all over Ireland.

So, keep Dublin Airport but if a change has to be made I’d vote for Collinstown. – Yours, etc,

JIM McCORMACK,
