`Many mobile phone apps, particularly social media ones, are highly addictive’

We need to listen very carefully to the experts in the field

Sir, – I read with interest the news item on a report by the Ombudsman for Children’s office which addresses mobile phone use in schools. (“School phone bans ‘not in best interest of children’,” September 11th ).

I was somewhat surprised, given the widespread international concern from experts in the field on phone usage among young people.

When I read that the authors of the report had consulted a panel of young people who are seemingly mobile phone users, my surprise abated.

Many mobile phone apps, particularly social media ones, are highly addictive, so it is hardly a surprise that phone users may want to maintain access as much as possible.

We need to listen very carefully to the experts in the field, and actually protect people as much as we can from the obvious online dangers that exist today. In particular, the grip of social media companies, arguably the most powerful corporations to ever exist, must be broken. – Yours, etc,

PAUL DILLON,
