Attacks on Indian people

Racism against any group of people is abhorrent

Letter of the Day

Sir, – I am absolutely appalled and outraged at what is happening to Indian people in Dublin. I really want to hang my head in shame when I hear that they are fearful of going out of their homes in case they are attacked by young thugs on our streets.

Racism against any group of people is abhorrent, but these young people obviously do not appreciate the contribution that so many of the immigrant population into our country are making. Our hospitals depend on them, as does much of the IT industry.

We Irish have emigrated to many parts of the world over many years. Historically, the Irish experienced racism in some countries.

However, our hope and expectation now is that we will be welcomed wherever we go.

Can we not extend the same welcome and hospitality to people coming to Ireland?

Many people are seeking a better life while, at the same time, making a valuable contribution to the quality of life of so many Irish people around the country.

Perhaps it is time for many of our young people who are engaged in racist violence to visit our hospitals and other areas that are essential to our economy to see and appreciate the contribution so many immigrants are making. – Yours, etc,

PAULA MOLLOY,

Baldoyle,

Dublin 13.
