Sir, – I find myself in total agreement with Emer McLysaght’s theory that, as you age, your values change (“Not sorted your festive waste management plan? You may be beyond help”, People, December 6th).
Lately, I’ve developed an alarming fondness for things that were once childhood punishments. Going to bed early, once a dreaded sentence, now feels like a decadent treat.
Only recently, my brother and I spent an entire conversation extolling the virtues of dishwasher salt. It struck me later how far we’ve fallen; once, we could analyse Armagh’s performances for hours. Now, it’s rinse cycles and limescale prevention.
If this is what ageing entails, I suppose it’s best to embrace it. Though I must draw the line at writing thank-you notes before Christmas Day is even over. – Yours, etc,
