A chara, – Mike Cormack (Letters, December 3rd) makes the point that “one particular world power” continuously visits our territorial waters and skies.
This power is of course not Russia but Britain, which, as our nearest neighbour, is determined to pursue its own defence interests irrespective of what we want.
This is the “open door” (Kevin Butler, Letters, November 27th), not faraway Russia, which couldn’t care less about us but is concerned about Britain.
Mr Butler castigates me for not wishing to waste vast sums of money on defence spending (which would be of no use in a real situation) but builds up the fantasy of a Russian threat to Ireland.
