Recalling my own school yard conker competitions where cheating and sore knuckles were the norm, it never descended to the use of a “brown pool ball” on a string, as recalled by your reporter Malachy Clerkin (“Scandal shows conkers is in need of root and branch reform”, Sport, October 15th).
