The money and the glory

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I suggest that instead of handing the Wimbledon champions a cheque for £2.7 million (€3.24 million) each next year for playing a series of tennis matches over two weeks, that they instead are awarded a beautifully written card inscribed with “Money is no substitute for greatness” (Letters, September 25th). If that is successful, we can roll the initiative out to golfers, footballers and other multimillionaires and donate the prize money to charity instead. – Yours, etc,

GERARD REYNOLDS,
