Sir, – John Kane (Letters, September 26th) reminds us that President Michael D Higgins has successfully run for the office of president twice. However, this is after breaking his promise that if elected in the first place he would not seek a second term.

I’m disappointed in myself for being disappointed when a politician breaks his word. – Yours, etc,
