Sir, – I agree with Cathal Melinn about the importance of laneways and pedestrian accesses (Letters, September 20th).
While serving as a Wicklow county councillor, I had the following description added to the county development plan: “Laneways should be open, well lit and capable of being easily monitored.” Forget the cinder blocks and narrow concrete passageways – open up links between estates for pedestrians and cyclists.
Ensure that newly built estates have provision for links with future developments.
Create new “Mass paths”, such as those much loved and used by older generations.
