Sir, – Joe Humphreys’s column on the views of Immanuel Kant regarding the morality of war is a useful counter-balance to the more widespread finger-pointing that characterises much coverage of modern warfare (Unthinkable, September 16th).
Looking at the level of conflict globally today, from actual wars to culture wars, through societal polarisation and civil wars, brings to mind another line sometimes attributed to Betrand Russell but also to George Orwell, whom Mr Humphreys mentioned at the start of the article. “War does not determine who is right, it determines who is left.” – Yours etc,
