Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (August 21st), 60 years ago this month, I spent a day exploring a quaint old village not far from Dublin. Tallaght, I note, now aspires to be a city.
I see a problem, though. To be a city, don’t you need a cathedral? Oxford is a city by virtue of Christ Church Cathedral, actually a rather grand college chapel.
St David’s in Pembrokeshire, a place as small as Tallaght ever was, is a city because of its beautiful Norman cathedral.
About time Dublin had a proper Catholic cathedral anyway. Imagining what it would probably look like, I’d say Tallaght would be the best place for it. – Yours, etc,
