A chara, – I had a similar encounter to Mark Paul with the myth of passport-free travel between Ireland and Britain on a recent ferry-rail trip to London “Culture of disrespect at Dublin Airport for passport-free travel area” (London Letter, World, August 14th).
Travelling from Dublin Port to London’s Euston Station there were no passport checks; however, on the return journey I had to produce my passport at Dublin Port.

Sir, – Mark Paul is miffed at having to show his passport at Dublin Airport on arriving from Glasgow in view of the Common Travel Area (CTA).
Travellers are advised that to avail of free movement under the CTA a passport should be carried to demonstrate their entitlement to exert the privilege.
The ghost of Flann O’Brien will enjoy the absurdity of showing a document to prove you don’t need it. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Mark Paul is right to feel aggrieved at State officials demanding to see his passport when landing from Glasgow.
