Sir, – Further to “Culture of disrespect at Dublin Airport for passport-free travel area” (London Letter, World, August 14th)‚ Mark Paul is spot-on! His article reminded me of arriving in Dover port from Ostend in 1967. Facing passport control and a choice of booths marked “UK citizens”, “Commonwealth”, and “Others”, I asked an official “Which one for Irish passports?” He smiled and told me that with an Irish passport I could take my pick – whichever had the shortest queue.
And, like Mark Paul, I’m never asked for a passport and rarely for any ID arriving at UK ports or airports from Ireland. – Yours, etc,
