Sir, – I was heartened to read Mark O’Connell’s reaction against the tide of advice churned out by our media (“We are up to our bleary eyes in advice. Surely no generation in history has been so relentlessly counselled”, Opinion & Analysis, July 6th), often in list form, such as “Ten things to ensure success”, etc.
Such lists seldom fail to reveal themselves as platitudes. Don’t people think for themselves nowadays?
More and more I return to Oscar Wilde’s maxim: “I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself.” – Yours, etc,
MAIRIDE WOODS,
