Sir, – Frank McNally tells us that he recently paid a “shocking €6.50 for a croissant in Dublin, which you wouldn’t pay for a croissant in the poshest Paris boulangerie” (An Irishman’s Diary, June 26th).
It’s worse than that. If you order a croissant at La Coupole, on the Boulevard de Montparnasse in Paris, once frequented by Samuel Beckett, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre, you will pay €2.50.
Until the constant exploitation of the Irish consumer ceases, the restaurant and food lobby’s call for a reduction in the VAT rate will continue to be ignored. – Yours, etc,
