Sir, – The recent local elections show the country is not pushing for change just yet while the new European Parliament needs time to get settled in.
Our largest trading partner, the UK, is on the brink of a general election which will likely cause a major political upheaval with unknown repercussions for Northern Ireland, plus another major trading partner, France, is about to do the same. The Government has a mountain of important legislation to get through before its term must end.
Furthermore, the Electoral Commission and county councils have a lot of work to do to clean up the electoral register before the general election.
We know this is in disarray from your correspondents following the referendum earlier this year, with many electors receiving multiple ballot papers, myself included, meaning that we don’t have an accurate view of the actual size of the electorate, and leaving considerable potential for fraud by multiple voting.
