Please cease calling a victory by Donegal an ‘ambush’

Sir, – Ambush, “A surprise attack by people lying in wait in a concealed position.”

On Saturday in Celtic Park, Donegal defeated Derry in the Ulster Championship. Most of the reporting in the papers and on social media described the result of the game as an “ambush”.

Back in 2014, Donegal beat Dublin in the semi-final of the All-Ireland. This result was, and indeed still today is, referred to as an “ambush”.

It is very annoying to Donegal supporters and the team that when when they win a game as underdogs, it is always called an ambush. On both occasions the Donegal team out-thought and outplayed their opposition. Perhaps by using superior tactics also on the day. Please cease calling a victory by Donegal an “ambush”. – Yours, etc,
