Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (March 30th), I remember the general shock and horror when the price of a pint of Guinness in Dublin went over two shillings (a rise of 12.7 cent) in 1967. With the price of a pint now at about €6, that’s equivalent to an annual rate of inflation of about 7 per cent. If this continues, a pint will cost €10 in about eight years!
I remember being in Westport some years ago and some publicans were selling Guinness in half-litre glasses. This is about 90 per cent of a pint in volume, and I assume it was introduced to keep the cost below a certain threshold figure. – Yours, etc,
