Don’t blame the woodwork

Marching orders

Sir, – Sean O’Byrne (Letters, February 29th) writes: “Woodwork, be it goalposts or crossbars, will not change position during a game except perhaps in the most extreme weather conditions”. Clearly Mr O’Byrne was not in attendance at at Oriel Park, Dundalk, for the 1974 FAI Cup semi-final between Finn Harps and Athlone Town. Athlone goalkeeper Mick O’Brien quite literally brought the crossbar down, not once but twice, during the game. O’Brien got his marching orders three minutes from the end and Harps won the game 5-0. – Yours, etc,

SEAMUS KELLY,

Dundalk,

Co Louth.
