Sir, – Now that agreement has been reached on SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh (News, January 31st), could I respectfully suggest that we make a change to Aviva Lansdowne Road, so that we restore the portion of the name which refers to the oldest rugby union test venue in the world. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – One response to the lamentable renaming of Páirc Uí Chaoimh would be for RTÉ, The Irish Times, and the rest of us to continue calling it by its present name.
There is a good precedent: the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has steadfastly refused to refer to sporting venues like Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium by any other name.
The stadium, which has changed its commercial name several times since opening in 2000, is still known to all as Docklands Stadium.
Aggressive advertising such as renaming historical sporting and cultural venues is just another form of environmental pollution.
