Sir, – Fair bowl to Frank McNally for his fascinating article on war-cries (An Irishman’s Diary, February 26th).
I have no substantial evidence for the following except that very keen followers of road bowling maintained that “faugh a ‘ballagh” was used somewhat similarly to “fore” (presumably from faugh) in golf.
Armagh is one of the few counties, if not the only one, besides Cork where the game is played.
The story is that the British troops adopted the game and the shout. – Yours, etc,
