Sir, – I was interested to read the headline “Tánaiste orders generals to increase Defence Forces recruitment targets for 2024″ (News, January 26th).
Well, I’m no general, and I have no military experience, but since the starting pay for recruits in the Defence Forces is €334 a week, perhaps the generals might suggest that a starting salary at minimum wage level would help. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Despite some recent improvements in pay and allowances, particularly for the Naval Service, the overall package remains unattractive for many, due to the hours worked, conditions of service and pensions. The implementation of the working time directive, without further delay, changes to pensions for members recruited since 2013, and increased capital expenditure for infrastructure and equipment would also greatly assist in recruitment. – Yours, etc,
