Returning the favour

Sir, – After the crash of the Irish economy in 2008, as part of the EU €85 billion bailout package, the UK passed the Loans to Ireland Act, giving a €3.835 billion loan to this country.

This was paid back by March 2021.

The total package showed the collective strength of the EU and its ability to help out those in need in times of crisis. While we are now well on the road to recovery, the UK economy is stagnating.

Perhaps the time has come to return the favour and offer them a loan.

This would send out a powerful message to the world that Ireland is a serious player internationally and that we do not forget our neighbours who helped us out in the past. It might open the eyes of many Brexiteers to the negative effects of leaving the EU. Some might even consider rejoining. – Yours, etc,
