Sir, – Margaret Butler has a point when she writes about the dearth in Christmas cards last year, and the probable cause being the price of postage (Letters, January 17th). I suggest that An Post issue a greatly reduced Advent stamp which would be valid only for the month of December. If it meant that ordinary letter writers – if there are still such people – avail of the cheap rate, then so be it. At least the postal service would be in use. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Today I belatedly received a Christmas card which had been posted in Northern Ireland, date-stamped December 12th, 2023.
Admittedly, there was a slight error on one line of the address. There was however a clear, legible and accurate Eircode included on the envelope. A quick check by An Post using the Eircode website would have confirmed the correct address and assisted with swift delivery.
It seems surprising that An Post does not appear to use the Eircode system which was originally established on a database provided by An Post GeoDirectory (a subsidiary of An Post). –
