Sir, – While retrofitting is indeed expensive and maybe beyond the reach of those on average incomes, I don’t agree with Ian Ó Dubghaill (Letters, January 2nd) that with all such schemes, from electric cars subsidies to solar panel grants, only the wealthy can afford to avail of them. The electric car subsidy is to encourage those to switch from committing to a new petrol or diesel car, which isn’t cheap anyway, to a relatively affordable electric car. As for solar panels, I recently installed 16 panels for €6,350 net of a grant, which is certainly within the reach of those on average incomes. – Yours, etc,
