Sir, – The Irish naval ship the LÉ Eithne is a ship that was equipped with the best modern technology many years ago and it is sad now that a decision has been made to scrap it. But there is a better option.
This option is to sink the LÉ Eithne somewhere deep enough in the ocean in an upright position so that it may encourage new coral reef growth and accompanying marine life. It would be important to do this submergence after it had been cleaned of all materials and substances that are potentially harmful to any marine life.
If it could be sunk somewhere within our Irish territorial waters, so much the better.
This could be a benefit to local Irish tourism with the prospect of tourists putting on appropriate underwater gear and going down to visit the LÉ Eithne as it lies elegantly among the beautiful corals and fishes that exist reasonably close to our Irish shores. – Yours, etc,
SEAN O’BRIEN,
Kilrush,
Co Clare.
