Wording of the Constitution

Use of the English and Irish language

Sir, – The referendum on the family is to be held in 2024. The people will be asked to vote on the insertion of a sentence into the Constitution that includes the phrase “the family possessing... inalienable and imprescriptible rights...”.

As an older person with a reasonable education, I have never used the words inalienable or imprescriptible in my conversation.

Why not ask people to vote for wording that they use regularly and can understand easily? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The Irish language text of the Constitution, which is given priority in law, does not mention “home”.

Would it be possible to update the translation of the Constitution without the need for a referendum? – Yours, etc,
