Sir, – In the article “Smithfield Horse Fair protesters: ‘The heritage is gone out of Dublin’” (News, September 11th), Colm Kiernan, chairman of the Smithfield Horse Fair committee, states that Smithfield square has changed beyond recognition.
He’s correct.
It is no longer an industrial zone on the periphery of the city populated by blacksmiths’ forges, breakers’ yards and people selling horse feed.
It is now a mixed residential, business and retail area in the centre of the city and, in my opinion, is no longer an appropriate place for holding a horse fair. – Yours, etc,
