Down with ironing

Wrinkles and creases

Sir, – Seán Andrews (Letters, August 17th) poses an interesting challenge: save energy by developing wrinkle-free clothes that don’t need ironing. Unfortunately, we got there years ago with Bri-nylon, one of the most uncomfortable but wrinkle-free clothing materials invented. With the major move to apartment living, tumble dryers have become the norm, one of the most energy-intensive domestic devices in use. They typically consume between two and three times the energy of an electric iron on an annual basis, depending on use of course. Time to get out the clothes line (oops, the apartment house rules don’t allow them!). – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Dispensing with ironing would benefit the planet. After 25 years of living in the most beautiful place in the world and walking daily with the beloved dogs, my clothes are now a good match for my face. Wrinkly. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Ironing conditions your precious clothes and makes them last longer. Fact. So get your irons out, put on some nice music and get cracking. – Yours, etc,
