Referendum on right to housing

Sir, – It is very encouraging that the Government’s Housing Commission voted by such an overwhelming majority to back a proposal to put to a referendum the right to housing (“Split in Housing Commission over proposals for constitutional referendum on right to housing”, News, July 31st), although it was not entirely surprising that a commission drawn from such a wide range of perspectives and interests includes a small minority who disagreed.

As members of Home for Good, we have made the case that a constitutional right to housing would make a significant contribution in the effort to tackle the housing and homelessness crisis. The Government must use the momentum of this overwhelming backing to move swiftly to finalise the wording and date when the proposal can be put to the people. – Yours, etc,
