Sir, – Michael Lennon (Letters, July 26th) argues that Ireland should take a much more relaxed attitude towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions because our country is so small that even if we eliminated all emissions it would have a negligible effect on climate change.
But on that basis, each Irish-sized sector of a large country, eg of the US, could make the same claim. Indeed, I could propose paying only 10 per cent of my usual annual income tax to Government because collection of the other 90 per cent would have a negligible effect on Ireland’s total annual tax take. What a merry old world that would be!
The demand that we drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions is an ethical demand made on each and every one of us. We are all carbon dioxide emitters and we all live in the one global home. – Yours, etc,
