Sir, – Mark Mohan is determined to misunderstand what lies behind the current housing crisis (“Exodus of landlords from rental market”, Letters, July 25th). As Micheál Martin persists in telling us when pressed on the matter, the cause of the housing crisis is lack of supply. If there were adequate affordable housing stock to meet demand, whether private landlords existed or not would hardly be noticed by the general public. In that orderly state of affairs, landlords would revert to their proper place of providing short-term tenure for urban starters and the small mobile segment of the population engaged in flexible labour markets. – Yours, etc,
