Sir, – Your editorial on Israel’s latest violent assault in the occupied territories (”Deadly descent into violence”, July 6th) strikes the right note, but it does not go far enough.
When he was minister for foreign affairs, Simon Coveney made it clear that Israel’s role in the occupied territories amounts to de facto annexation. The response of the international community to such annexation should be the same in this case as it has been in Ukraine: a wide-ranging punitive regime of sanctions needs to be imposed on Israel.
Perhaps, in your next editorial on the issue, you might remind our Government of Mr Coveney’s words and call upon it to urge our EU partners to take appropriate action now. – Yours, etc,
