Pedestrians and road safety

Footpaths

Sir, – Some years ago, a diligent road safety campaigner persuaded Government to introduce a law obliging drivers to maintain a safe distance of 1.5 metres when passing cyclists. However, many narrow winding roads have speed “targets” of 80 or 100 k/mh, with no footpath or hard shoulder, so why is there no similar law to protect people who are walking on our roads? – Yours, etc,

PAUL WALDRON,

Ballinteer,
