Sir, – Not unexpectedly, it seems that the “State’s most senior public servants look set to be awarded salary increases” after recommendations from a pay review panel (News, June 28th).
The Minister for Public Expenditure is quoted as saying that if pay was not increased “we would end up in the situation where we wouldn’t have the best people doing the right work for our country”.
The suggestion that these same loyal public servants would be rushing out the door to get better private sector pay doesn’t stand up.
The generous pension entitlements and enormous lump sums which these high earners can expect when they retire are not something to be given up lightly! – Yours, etc,
