Sir, – I cycle daily. While there are not any cycle lanes on the rural roads that I use for my exercise, I entirely agree with your correspondent, Séamas Bearnard Breathnach (Letters, June 9th) that many of those that do exist appear to lack any type of maintenance. In my view, they are a hazard and best avoided. I would take my chances on the roadway any day. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I wish to ask a question which I am sure will resonate with others and it is simply this: When will cyclists stop using the paths to cycle on and what can be done about this?
I walk regularly and have had a number of near misses with cyclists, two in the past three days. The last incident caused me to jerk and twist my knee. You will understand I am not referring to paths where there is a designated cycle lane but regular footpaths, both in town centres and beyond. – Yours, etc,
