Wartime codebreakers

Extraordinary characters

Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (Letters, May 15th), another Irish-born codebreaker from the second World War was the late William Pirrie (Bill) Barbour, who taught classics for over 30 years at Portora Royal school, Enniskillen. Bill Barbour was interviewed in Dublin during his last year as a Trinity College undergraduate by a UK Foreign Office representative; and the interview was arranged by his tutor at Trinity, Joseph Johnston. Barbour spent 18 months in London in 1943 and 1944 working on American, Yugoslav and Finnish codes. He is commemorated by an article in the Dictionary of Irish Biography. – Yours, etc,

CDC ARMSTRONG,

Belfast.
