Hotels and tourism

Lucrative contracts

Sir, – Because hoteliers and other accommodation providers saw an opportunity to house refugees under lucrative Government contracts and reduced operating costs, other businesses in the tourism industry are facing loss of income (“Up to 10,000 tourism jobs displaced due to hotel bed shortage”, News, May 9th). Fáilte Ireland is calling for employment wage support schemes, revenue loss schemes, etc, for tourism businesses. Why should support be given to businesses in an industry as the result of the decisions of other businesses in the same industry? Are we close to a call from Fáilte Ireland for support for the tourism industry due to weather conditions? – Yours, etc,

HUGH McDERMOTT,

Dromahair,

Co Leitrim.
