Sir, – It was good to read the opinion piece by Lieut Gen Sean Clancy, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces “Our people feel shame and anger – we must change” (April 27th).
The recent report by the Independent Review Group makes for disturbing reading, regarding allegations of bullying and sexual assaults. However, they remain allegations until such time as a full statutory inquiry is carried out and its report issued. The Government needs to ensure that it is carried out expeditiously, and that all recommendations are implemented without delay.
The Government also needs to provide the Defence Forces with adequate resources to ensure that they are fit for purpose and enabled to carry out their duties.
Maybe it’s time once again to have a full-time Minister for Defence at the Cabinet table to ensure delivery. – Yours, etc,
