A chara, – The announcement by Minister for Finance Michael McGrath that the exchequer will run a surplus of some €16 billion between this year and next year is most welcome indeed.
The last time a Fianna Fáil Minister was associated with budgetary anomalies of this magnitude was when they were, tragically, indicating an enormous deficit, and one which urgently needed to be addressed.
On that occasion and ever since, that Government attracted 100 per cent of the blame for the situation because, apparently, no external factors could possibly have been involved.
I trust that on this occasion the Government will attract 100 per cent of the praise for their singular responsibility in obtaining this gargantuan haul of cash for the nation.
