Sir, – Fortunately, not all streets named Hope are as empty or have such ominous dead endings as Belfast’s (Frank McNally, An Irishman’s Diary, April 19th).
Liverpool, another city with a history of sectarian strife, happily now behind it, also has a Hope Street. But its content and ending have a more upbeat symbolism. It links the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King with the city’s Anglican Cathedral. Half-way between the two is Stephen Broadbent’s Sheppard-Worlock statue commemorating the city’s former Anglican and Catholic church leaders who did much to bridge sectarian divisions in the city. – Yours, etc,
