Three-day wait for abortion

The waiting period

Sir, – I refer to Seána Glennon’s argument in favour of removal of the mandatory three-day reflection period to access an abortion (“The three-day waiting period for an abortion”, Opinion & Analysis, April 12th).

If only all other medical treatments were available within three days to the sick and dying, to those on waiting lists for years etc, the public would have little complaint with the HSE or with other medical practitioners in this country.

I cannot even get a root-canal treatment, an X-ray, or an MRI scan locally, much less treatment for any life-saving illness, without travelling 55km to Sligo or 153km to Dublin, while others are fiercely campaigning for life-ending services to be available in every corner of the country. Am I justified in feeling peeved? – Yours etc,

A chara, – According to the HSE, a total of 3,951 women did not proceed with an abortion following their first medical consultation. That could be 3,951 good reasons to retain the three-day waiting period. – Is mise le meas,
