Sir, – As an avid walker and as a regular user of Dublin Port, I read with mounting excitement Olivia Kelly’s report on plans which will open up port lands to the public (“New bridge over the Liffey: What do plans for Dublin Port look like?”, News, March 21st).

What’s not to like about 16km of cycle and pedestrian paths, a maritime village, a waterside public plaza and floodlit playing pitches?

I should have started with the last sentence. Dublin Port intends to lodge a planning application this summer (very good so far), hopes to start construction in 2026 and has a target completion date in 2039.

What is it about Ireland and public infrastructure projects? – Yours, etc,
