Pedestrians, cars and traffic in the capital

A snapshot of morning city traffic

Sir, – Between 8.15 and 8.25 yesterday morning, I was walking toward Heuston Station in Dublin along the north quay between Mellows Bridge and Sean Heuston Bridge. There was a lot of traffic building up and given its slow pace I observed that in the majority of instances drivers were travelling alone and very few had accompanying passengers. I realise this is just a snapshot of morning city traffic. However, in spite of fuel charges, increased insurance costs, etc, it seems, sadly, the car is still the mode of choice for many commuters, if not a necessity. – Yours, etc,

CLARE BALFE,

Dublin 7.
